The Rowley House Museum

Owner: Preservation Williamsport

Description: This 1888 high-end Queen Anne mansion is in an amazing state of preservation.  The 13-bedroom home, built by internationally known Edwin A. Rowley, is owned, and maintained by “Preservation Williamsport”.   Recent additions to the museum include three signed Severin Roesen mid-19th century oil paintings which were original to Williamsport, and the recently restored Porte Cachere. There will be a special exhibit this year of four classic paintings by Williamsport artists. The artists are no longer living, and the paintings have never been exhibited before. Tour guides will tell the story of each painting.

The Smith/Ulman House

Description: This Victorian three-story, brick, Second Empire-style mansion with mansard roof is the largest house of this style surviving in Williamsport. It was designed and built in 1866 by Philadelphia architect Isaac Hobbs for Henry B. Smith family and in 1880 sold to Moses Ulman. The home is adorned with ceiling medallions as well as converted gas chandeliers. The main floor parlor, library and dining rooms have been preserved in original fashion. This home has since served as apartments, a rectory, law office and currently was changed back to a family home.

The 419 / Hartshorn House

Description: Built in 1873 for $14,000 by Frederick Hartshorn, the house had many lives. For Victorian Christmas’ 25th anniversary a special performances of Wagner’s Sigfried Idyll will be held on the staircase of Hartshorn House. You will be entertained by performances throughout the day of event. Professional local musicians will gather in the newly restored home to play as originally performed for Wagner’s family on Christmas morning in 1870. Be our guest at this event celebrating the holiday and our historic heritage!

Performances begin at 10 AM with the last performance at 4 PM

The Peter Herdic Inn

Owner: Gloria Miele, Jim Wood and Robert Elion

Description: This majestic brownstone and brick mansion was built around 1878 and has been beautifully restored as a historic inn, welcoming guests year around. The Inn illustrates late Victorian influences and features many original gas light fixtures including an ornate dining room chandelier. Note the original red oak woodwork and the exquisite stained-glass window at the stairway's first landing. Originally the private home of Lemuel Ulman, a clothier in Williamsport, the house was built from land previously owned by Peter Herdic and was designed by Eber Culver. The Inn is all ready for a Christmas Party. Come toast our good cheer!

The DuBois House

Owner: Elizabeth Miele

Description: This house was built between 1865 and 1875, which was the peak of Italianate Villa architecture. Possibly built by Eber Culver as a single-family home for Abel DuBois, who was involved in the logging business with his brother and later operated a lumbermill in Bodines. This home has since been converted into several apartments, with the large center staircase removed. You will be touring a smaller upstairs apartment in this building.

The M'Cauley House

Owners: Dr. Zachary and Mrs. Katie Ritter

Description: Built in 1917, this Georgian-style home with Mediterranean influences was the retirement residence of Calvin H. M'Cauley, who had served as Chief Counsel for the Pennsylvania Railroad in their New York City offices. M'Cauley commissioned an aspiring young New York architect to design his home which was featured in the June 1919 edition of House Beautiful magazine. This is a classic grand scale, upper class home with fairly conservative design. The home inside features patterned hardwood floors, numerous French doors, white-painted custom wainscoting, wide moldings, trims and built-ins, all exuding old-world craftsmanship.

Thomas and Susanna Long House

Owners: Steven and Sarah Pinckney

Description: Built in 1895 for Thomas and Susanna Long, this Queen Anne Victorian is one of the oldest homes in Vallamont. The home has undergone extensive preservation and renovation work in recent years, including the restoration of the exterior (clapboard, fish scale siding, windows, and doors). A full renovation to convert the previous walk-up attic to living space was completed in 2024 by Ford Custom Renovation. This space will be included in the tour and features two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a common area in the turret.

The Woodmont

Owners: Vincent and Selina Pulizzi

Description: The Woodmont, a 1926 Dutch Colonial home, holds within its walls a rich tapestry of history and charm. This home was originally built by the Nicely family who ran the local retail music business, D.S Andrus & Co, from the 1920's to the 1960's. In 2020, this home found new stewards in Vincent and Selina, who embarked on a journey to restore and update this architectural gem.

Today, the result is a fusion of old-world charm and contemporary convenience, where the past blends with the innovations of the present, creating a timeless haven for years to come.

The Auch/Kaderli House

Owners: Brian and Kristin Kaderli

Description: This is a brick Queen Anne Victorian circa 1895 home with the original wrap-around porch and veranda. The house has a large front gable with a decorative yellow brick design below a fan style center window. Note the detailed carvings on the gabled peaks and on the original oak front door as well as the ornate gingerbread trim along the porch soffit area. The white painted bench to the left of the front door echoes the same quatrefoil cutout design. This is an excellent and intact exterior example of the Queen Anne style in Williamsport. Inside the home, view the intricately carved oak woodwork along the entrance, stairway and adjoining rooms.

Tour of Churches

City Alliance Church

380 West Fourth Street

This Romanesque-style church was designed and built by Eber Culver on land donated by Peter Herdic around 1860. After being destroyed by floods, the original building was torn down in 1898. A new church was built in 1914. The mountain stone was quarried in this area. Note the Tiffany windows.

Saint Joseph the Worker Church

702 West Fourth Street

Built in 1886 by Amos Wagner on land donated by Peter Herdic, this Romanesque-style church was built to serve the Irish community. The stone came from the nearby town of Ralston. The church seats 600 people and features an abundance of marble and gold décor.

Saturday church tours are available: 10 AM – 3 PM
Saturday lunch, beverages, and crafts are available for purchase 9 AM to 3 PM in the Parish Center.

Covenant Central Presbyterian Church

807 West Fourth Streets

Built in 1910, this Richardsonian/Romanesque-style structure is composed of marble and granite, quarried from the Avondale Quarry near Philadelphia. The roof is terracotta tile and copper with thick window lintels. There are large semi-circular arched entries, three doors with stained glass, and many arched, stained-glass windows. The church has an eight-sided dome in the sanctuary that, includes a cross on top made of solid oak with hammered copper overlay.

Music will be playing in the sanctuary throughout the day.

Trinity Episcopal Church

844 West Fourth Street

Built in 1875 by Culver and Thorn, the church was paid for by Peter Herdic, who donated both the land and the building to the parish. His father-in-law, Judge Maynard, presented the church with a set of Westminster chimes. The church is an example of English-Gothic architecture and contains stone quarried locally from Bald Eagle Mountain.

Church tours are available: 10 AM – 3 PM
A soup lunch will be available for purchase on Saturday: 11 AM – 2 PM in the parish hall

Christ Episcopal Church

426 Mulberry Street

Christ Episcopal Church is the city’s oldest Episcopal church. It was founded in 1841 as the First Episcopal Church of Williamsport and was located on the present site of the New Covenant Church. In 1869, the now standing Christ Church was built and held its first service on Christmas day of that same year. This Norman Gothic structure is appointed with several genuine Tiffany-stained glass windows, encaustic tile work, and many fine examples of brass and woodwork. It is also noted historically for the tenure of the eleventh Rector, The Rev. Dr. John Henry Hopkins, Jr., composer of the beloved hymn “We Three Kings”.

Wildwood Cemetery Chapel

91 Wildwood Boulevard (This is not on the trolley shuttle loop.)

Founded in 1863, Wildwood Cemetery was designed by Williamsport native and architect David K. Dean, and began on 50 acres of land. Wildwood’s original chapel, office and receiving vault will be the focal point of tours and lectures on its history and the many lumber barons buried within its 350+ acres. Built for $12,000 in 1897, the entry structure is made of Pennsylvania white marble laid up in regular coursework, which is rock faced, featuring ornate carvings. The marvelous multi-paneled chapel-stained glass windows are excellent examples of Victorian Decorative Arts by the famed Buffalo-Stained Glass Works, of Buffalo, NY.
